Long Island is an island located in the state of New York, just east of Manhattan. It has four counties which includes Suffolk and Nassau. When a lot of folks think of Long Island, however, they just refer to the first two counties, says a Suffolk County computer repair owner. Long Island has several bridges and tunnels that connect it to other places so it doesn’t really feel isolated according to Nassau County computer repair man. Nassau and Suffolk counties are both suburban counties with many of the residents commuting into Manhattan for work. There are some differences between the 2 counties there. Nassau county is quite affluent with locations of expensive homes located right on the waters of the Long Island Sound. It has more development than Suffolk County is more rural with more open areas. There is much more traffic in Nassau due to the populations that reside there. A few former potato fields in Suffolk county have now been turned into vineyards that produce their own wine. The most famous part of Suffolk County is the exclusive beach spot called the Hamptons where the richest New Yorkers head to enjoy the beach and the expensive lifestyles that their country homes provide them.
In fact, the county of Nassau is listed as the third wealthiest county in the state of New York. Because it is an island, there are many waterfront properties that were constructed by Aristocrats with family money many years ago. It had a population growth from the 1950’s to the 1970’s and was considered the fastest growing county in the US. This high density of population is still there as many of them work or want to be close to all of the things that New York City has so close.
Although many Long Islanders work in New York city, there are a lot of employment opportunities on the little island too. It is known for its research and engineering and has several companies that deal in those areas there. It also has the biggest industrial park on the East Coast with over 1300 businesses dealing with industries located there. The more recent industry of wine making and vineyards has happened over the past 25 years as well as other types of farms like pumpkins.
Long Island is known to be an enormous melting pot of different ethnicities and this is shown in the various restaurants that are located there. There are several wonderful pizza places with the prominent Italian influence there in addition to diners and delis that have Greek food and some terrific bagel shops that are owned by Jewish families. Some famous Long islanders that have sung about their hometown are Billy Joel and Paul Simon among several others.
